When life is life-ing, come back to the basics
This blog should have landed in your inbox on Monday. It's now Wednesday. And actually, that feels quite fitting for what I wanted to talk about this week.
Because sometimes life just… lifes.
The routine slips. You stay up later than you should. You realise you’ve barely drank any water. Movement goes out the window, your brain feels like it has 47 tabs open and suddenly even the things you know make you feel better feel like another thing on the to-do list.
And I think this is where we can make looking after ourselves far more complicated than it needs to be. When everything feels a little chaotic, you don’t necessarily need a new routine, a supplement cupboard or an hour-long morning ritual. Sometimes you just need to come back to the basics.
Start with water
Your lymphatic system is part of your body's fluid balance, and staying adequately hydrated supports normal bodily function. It doesn't need to be complicated. Keep a bottle beside you. Have a glass when you wake up. If you're someone who gets to 3pm and realises you've survived on coffee, start there. Not perfect. Just a little more intentional.
Move your body, gently.
Your lymphatic system doesn't have a central pump like your heart. Movement and muscle contractions are among the things that help support lymph flow. This absolutely does not mean you need to drag yourself through a hard workout when you're already exhausted. Walk the dog. Stretch for ten minutes. Put some music on while you're making dinner. Rebound if that's something you enjoy. Get outside and walk around the block.
Small amounts of movement still count.
Breathe
When we're stressed, busy or overwhelmed, our breathing can become shallow without us even noticing. Slowing your breathing and using your diaphragm can support relaxation, while the pressure changes created by diaphragmatic breathing also play a role in lymphatic return. Even a few slow breaths can be a way of telling your body: We're safe. We can slow down for a minute.
And please, sleep
I know. Easier said than done. But sleep is one of those basics we often sacrifice first when life gets busy, even though it's the time our body desperately needs to recover. You don't need the perfect evening routine tonight. Maybe you just put your phone down half an hour earlier. Maybe you go to bed when you're tired instead of starting another episode. Maybe tonight, rest gets to be productive too.
You don't need to do everything
I think sometimes wellness has become another thing we're expected to be good at. 10,000 steps. Two litres of water. Morning sunlight. Supplements. Meditation. Journalling. Perfect meals. Eight hours of sleep. And when you're already stretched, that can feel like another list you're failing to complete.
So this week, I'm not giving you another list. I'm reminding you, and probably reminding myself too... to come back to what you already know.
Drink some water.
Take a few deep breaths.
Move your body in a way that feels good.
Get outside if you can.
Prioritise sleep where possible.
And when life is life-ing, remember that looking after yourself doesn't have to be all or nothing.
Sometimes the smallest things are exactly where we need to begin.
